The
first kind of student that can get into grad
school is the one with average to above-average
grades -- grades that are respectable but that
would not be considered excellent or outstanding.
Most of these students would not get accepted
into graduate school unless they did some things
to overcome the shortcoming in their grades.
One way to deal with a noncompetitive grade-point-average
is to study harder and more effectively. But,
it is not the purpose of this book to help with
that. Rather, this book will show students with
average to above-average grades how they can
get into graduate school despite the fact that
their grades are not outstanding.
The
second kind of student that this book is meant
for is the one with very good or excellent grades
who mistakenly thinks that this is all that
is needed to get into graduate school and to
do well in graduate studies. It is sad and unfortunate,
but it is not uncommon for dedicated undergraduates
to be completely devoted to their studies and
to achieve excellent grades, only to make grave
errors of judgment later on when applying to
graduate school and fail to get into a graduate
program altogether. In the minds of many such
students, it has long been a foregone conclusion
that they would eventually go to graduate school
and earn an advanced degree. What a tragic disappointment
it is when they realize that their bachelor’s
degree may be the only university degree they
ever get, and the career they have longed for
and worked so hard for might just be an impossible
dream. The cruelest irony is that often the
A-plus student is rejected for admission into
a graduate program, and at the same time, other
students are getting accepted into the same
program with grades that are more like Bs or
B-pluses!
You
don’t think you can get into graduate
school with Bs and B-pluses? In fact, hundreds
of students across North America do so every
year. My personal history is proof that a typical
student can overcome mediocre undergraduate
grades and get into graduate school, earn a
Masters degree and Ph.D., and have a successful
and prestigious career. See my personal experience for more info.
